Consumers Checkbook Bargains

How CHECKBOOK BARGAINS Works

Select a product category, then product, from the Table of Contents. The heading of the table that appears on your screen will identify the type of product listed in the table and explain what information is contained in each column. Beneath the product name, look for a hypertext link that will take you to advice about buying that product (not all products have such shopping advice) and an explanation of the listed features. Some features are linked by hypertext to an explanation.

The yellow rows of the table contain the names of manufacturers who produce the products. If the manufacturer's name is underlined, it means we have been able to provide a link to the manufacturer's homepage where you may find useful information about its product line

Under each manufacturer's name, there is a list of the model numbers. Under the heading "Target Price", you will find listed a price that is the lowest we've found for that product based on retailer quotes, prices we collect weekly from newspaper advertisements in seven major cities around the country, and prices found in mail-order catalogs and brochures. With this price in hand, you can shop with some confidence, knowing what constitutes a good price on a particular product. In addition, by comparing the models and features within a given product category, you can get a good idea of what a product, with the features that are important to you, might cost.

BARGAINS is not a substitute for competitive shopping (getting bids from multiple retailers on the product you wish to buy) or product homework (checking out reliability and feature compatibility), but does arm the typical consumer with one more piece of solid price information for their shopping arsenal.
