License and Disciplinary Actions

Some state Web sites are now reporting disciplinary and investigative actions that have been taken against physicians and the status of their state licensing. This information varies dramatically by state. Some allow the user to search for a specific physician and then report any "actions" in that physician’s profile. Others list all "actions" by date range. Most provide the information free but some charge a per report fee.

The list of Web sites below report on some aspect of physician licensing status and any "actions" that have been taken relative to the physician. Each state has different definitions of license status and "actions." You are encouraged to read all of the related materials that explain the content and format of each Web site.

Consumers' CHECKBOOK gives you independent, nonprofit, no-advertising ratings you can trust of local auto repair shops, plumbers, veterinarians, banks, doctors, dentists, carpet cleaners ... and much more ... plus in-depth articles with advice from CHECKBOOK's award-winning magazine. CHECKBOOK saves you time and money for the things that matter.

CHECKBOOK only rates firms when there are enough ratings for a meaningful evaluation. Misleading evaluations based on a handful of unscreened, anonymous posters are never the basis for a CHECKBOOK rating. CHECKBOOK accepts no money or advertisements from the firms it rates. The financial incentives for bias are non-existent. And, we've been around since 1974.

To find out who the top doctors are around the country, nonprofit Consumers' CHECKBOOK surveyed roughly 375,000 physicians to tell us which specialists they would want to care for a loved one. The Top Doctors database contains the names of over 24,000 doctors who were mentioned most often. Find top-rated doctors in the fifty largest metropolitan areas, in over thirty-five specialties, and more.

Consumers' CHECKBOOK/The Center for the Study of Services is an independent, nonprofit consumer organization founded in 1974 with the help of funding from the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs. Our purpose is to provide consumers information to help them get high quality services and products at the best possible prices. We are supported entirely by subscription payments and donations from individual consumers who subscribe to our magazines, and by fees for our survey and information services and books. We do not accept donations from businesses and our publications carry no advertising.

Roughly one out of ten Americans will be admitted to a hospital next year. A key question for anyone who must enter a hospital is how to be sure it is a good one. The Consumers' Guide to Hospitals points you in the right direction.

The Guide provides:
  • A comparison of death and "adverse outcome" rates for major types of cases.
  • Doctors' ratings of hospitals in areas such as High-Risk Adult Surgery, Low-Risk Adult Surgery, Complex Medical Care for Adults, and more.
  • Patients' ratings of hospitals.
  • Assessments of whether the hospitals fail to provide proper tests and procedures.
  • Ratings of hospitals on key patient safety measures.
Desirability Scores for:
  • High-Risk Adult Surgery
  • Low-Risk Adult Surgery
  • Complex Adult Medical Care
  • High-Risk Delivery of a Baby
  • Uncomplicated Delivery of a Baby
  • High-Risk Child Surgery
