Kidney Disease — Overview, Symptoms, Treatments, and Other Resources.
Information on Kidney Disease from the National Kidney Disease Education Program
Early kidney disease has no symptoms. Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and family history of kidney failure are key risk factors. Blood and urine tests can find kidney disease. Kidney disease can be treated. The earlier you know you have it, the better. Read more at the National Kidney Disease Education Program, National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Information on Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) at the National Kidney Foundation
26 million American adults have CKD and millions of others are at increased risk.
Early detection can help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure.
Heart disease is the major cause of death for all people with CKD. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the best estimate of kidney function...More at the National Kidney Foundation.

Information on Chronic Kidney Disease at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
Early and comprehensive treatment of kidney disease helps prevent complications and can delay progression. In general, chronic kidney disease (CKD) shows no symptoms. By the time symptoms appear, the damage is typically irreversible. The best strategy against the silent danger of CKD is prevention by identifying individual risks and correcting or managing modifiable risk factors. Screening for kidney disease at regular intervals provides early warning if kidney function begins to decline. Read more at UPMC.

A longitudinal study of kidney structure and function in adults
BACKGROUND: Although kidney size is commonly measured in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), its relationship with kidney function is poorly understood. We conducted this longitudinal study to better understand the relationship between kidney size and function. Full text of this abstract is available free through PubMed.
Reduced drug use and hospitalization rates in patients undergoing hemodialysis who received pharmaceutical care: a 2-year, randomized, controlled study
Abstract Study Objective. To investigate the impact of a pharmaceutical care program managed by clinical pharmacists on drug use, drug costs, hospitalization rates, and drug-related problems (DRPs) in ambulatory patients undergoing hemodialysis. Full text of this abstract is available free through PubMed.
Blood pressure in children and target-organ damage later in life
The aim of this study was to examine the association between blood pressure (BP) in children and adolescents and cardiovascular and renal disease in adulthood. This was a retrospective study on patients <18 years of age with an elective admission to Landspitali University Hospital in Reykjavik, Iceland, between 1950 and 1967. Full text of this abstract is available free through PubMed.
Role of oxidants/inflammation in declining renal function in chronic kidney disease and normal aging
Oxidant stress (OS) and inflammation increase in normal aging and in chronic kidney disease (CKD), as observed in human and animal studies. In cross-sectional studies of the US population, these changes are associated with a decrease in renal function, which is exhibited by a significant proportion of the population. Full text of this abstract is available free through PubMed.
Weight loss and proteinuria: systematic review of clinical trials and comparative cohorts
BACKGROUND: Obesity is a risk factor for the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The impact of weight loss on proteinuria and renal function is less clear. We aimed to determine the effect of intentional weight loss on proteinuria and kidney function. Full text of this abstract is available free through PubMed.
The association of renal impairment with all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality
Background. The prognostic value of reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was examined in a community-based cohort of British women. Full text of this abstract is available free through PubMed.

Consumers' Guide to Hospitals
Which Hospital Should You Choose (or Avoid)?
"What makes the Consumers' Guide to Hospitals so special?
We've got 30 million answers to that question. That's how many hospital records Consumers' CHECKBOOK sifted through to calculate risk-adjusted death rates and adverse-outcome rates, and that's just part of the data used to rate the hospitals. The organization also sent out more than 280,000 questionnaires to physicians in 53 major metropolitan areas in the United States, asking them to rate their local hospitals; checked ratings of the hospitals by surveyed consumers; checked which hospitals were providing recommended tests and procedures for patients with specified medical problems; and more."
