I hired Lee to replace my front door. He called the morning of service, which I had taken off work for, to tell me it was too cold to use the caulk he has. He said we could move forward anyways, but it may not set. I suggested two days later when the weather would be above the 40 degree limit his caulk needed and he still see-sawed how even if it's a little above the limit it may not work well. I grew frustrated, went online to Home Depot, and found caulk that set in extreme temperatures that was the same brand he had, just the improved version. I texted it to him and he said it would work so I WENT and bought the caulk for him to do the work. Strike one for not being resourceful in executing work. He arrived on time the day of the job. The work was accompanied by a lot of "oh, I wasn't expecting this" or "uh oh, here's a little issue" or "we're going to have to get another tool to get this to work". Just a lot of unnerving, negative commentary that kept me thinking something was unusual and complicated with my door. He worked fast and got the door replace within two hours. This was wonderful because he is paid hourly. Also, he charged me a $30 or $50 appearance fee. I can't remember which but I thought it was total BS. He said it's his fee for showing up to the job and the cost of his travel. He said all contractors charge it. No other contractor I reached out to on Checkbook for this job charged it. So two hours is, door is up, time to put on the hardware. THIS TOOK HIM ANOTHER HOUR. He seemed utterly confused by the door handle I had, took out all the pieces, didn't read any instructions and ultimately installed the handle from one set and the deadbolt from another set, so he mixed the hardware. He said the deadbolt that matched would not fit where my holes were drilled. My husband installed the matching deadbolt that night by reading the instructions. It had to be facing a certain direction to fit. Strike two. Lee installed our door, but left a huge mess and unfinished work after. Fingerprints on the white door frame, caulk droppings on our front door mat, he spread caulk using his finger so it went onto our painted walls as opposed to staying tight next to the door frame, he filled chunks of wood he tore from our door frame with wood filler that we then had to sand and paint after. Bottom line we had so much fixing and patching to do after he left. Strike three. I would not hire him again. It would be worth it to spend more and have the job finished than to have more work that needs done after the handyman leaves.
