Stick with hardscapes and you'll be pleased with the result. The First Impressions crew worked long and hard on hot days to get the work done. We're mostly happy with the hardscapes that were put in place. We had them replace the driveway, demolish a sunroom, install a patio, replace the back porch and walkway, replace the front porch, and replace the fence. It was a significant amount of work that was done. The issues we had were with communication and making sure the crew installed something we would be happy with. We were never presented with a full design plan before work began. We only had the initial proposal, which contained the layout and scope of work. We were not given brick/stone samples until the crew arrived and started work. We had to let the crew know what we had agreed upon in the contract as to the materials and designs. Because of the pandemic, we are working from home, so we were able to keep track of what was going on. This turned out to be good, since there were things that we had to clear up as work went on. The step into the house was not included in the plan, and the crew was not planning on doing it. We only found out because we overheard them discussing whether or not they should do it because it would add to the amount of work they had to do. Good thing we have someone that speaks Spanish in the home. After we contacted someone, the step was included as part of the work. They began work on demolishing the front porch and did not take care to cover the storm door, or let us know beforehand they would be starting the work. We had to stop them and rush to cover our door with cardboard. Our brand new storm door now has scuffs and scratches. They definitely oversold the abilities of the company to perform all the work we contracted them to do. Part of the work included demolishing an outdoor sunroom, which required tuck pointing the brick afterwards. This was done horribly. The "tuck pointing" uses a different color mortar than the rest of the brick, and doesn't even have the same profile. There are still outlines of the old sunroom that was removed. The fence quality varies along the length of the fence. No care was taken in making sure planks were straight and undamaged. Screws are misaligned and missing. Cuts are not straight. One of the gates is not the same height as the fence. The concrete around the fence posts was poured badly and is a mess in some places. Part of the work included replacing the columns on the front porch. This was done badly, and unevenly. From afar, it looks nice, but up close, it's awful. There are gaps between boards and visible holes. There was little quality control for the final product. The patio/driveway work was part of the DC Riversmart program for permeable pavers. We were misinformed about the amount of the rebate we would be receiving, and got $420 less than what we thought we would. While this is not a huge amount, it is still significant. This was due to miscalculations by the designer. We were told we should have gotten the full amount they told us, but were left hanging after several emails. We calculated the amount of the rebate ourselves and determined we were given wrong information. We didn't even receive any apologies for the error. We've brought up the fence issues of damaged planks, missing screws, and short gate height to First Impressions. We got a response saying they would see what they could do, but we haven't heard from them since. It doesn't seem like they stand by the quality of their finished work. We're hoping we don't have further issues as time passes.

One of the best experiences I have had with a contractor in the DC area. About 5+ years ago, First Impressions Hardscapes demolished our decades old concrete patio and installed a nice pattern of pervious pavers. The team working the project was very kind and professional. They went above and beyond the original scope of work and the outcome looked great. That same year a separate team from First Impressions also built a wooden fence for me and they followed my design instructions without any hesitation or complaints. The past year I called them out again to switch the swing direction of my fence door (because a neighbor built a fence adjacent to mine making the original swing direction difficult to open) and again First Impressions came out and flipped the fence door making it easier to open. I can't say enough good things about First Impressions and its team members. A+ service.

I can't say enough good things about this company. We invited several companies to provide a bid in redoing our driveway. To begin this was the only company to use a tape measure to get the size; others used the wheel and came up with as much as 30% more! This was the only company that informed me about permeable pavers which when installed properly would be eligible for a rebate from the county. During the job, John, the top man added additional touches at no extra cost. And, everyone with whom I dealt from Karen in the office, Dustin who was the measurer and "go-between" and John were exceptional to deal with.
