We bought a new Nissan Leaf from Bruce Kim, who was an outstanding salesman. Unlike some other dealerships, he treated me like an intelligent person, responded promptly and offered the best deal. Most of the communication was via e-mail and phone. There were no surprises when we went in to pick up the car and we were out the door with our new ride in about 1.5 hours.

I think it would be helpful for Checkbook to categorize dealership reviews by department, such as new car, used car and service, because our experience was a lot different with the service department.

While no fault of Herb Gordon, our new car had a surprising number of small faults. However, it took three visits to get the radio/nav unit replaced because of a failed satellite tuner. In another instance they failed to do all of items that were reviewed with the service manager at drop-off, requiring an additional visit. Finally, they lost track of my appointment (though thankfully had the promised part in stock), which stretched the repair into the next day. I got a loaner, but then had to scramble to find car seats for my kids because I wasn't notified until late in the day that my car wouldn't be ready. These visits didn't cost me anything out of pocket, but felt like a big waste of time. The service department staff have always been friendly, though it seems like they need to focus on effectiveness and getting problems solved in a single visit. The service experience has been an outlier in my couple decades of car ownership. I'm going to try a different dealer for my next service trip.
