Based on checkbook review I decided to take the plunge and took my 2011 BMW 335d (diesel) to AK Auto Service to replace the harmonic balancer which is a common failure and a oil change. My previous mechanic closed his shop so I didn't have a known shop to take the vehicle and that made me nervous as I am a gearhead. I called the shop yesterday and Mr. Kim asked me to bring the car in. So I took it in this morning, not far from my home in Vienna. I asked him to replace the balancer and serpentine belt, oil, filter which I had already purchased from a BMW supplier and he said no problem he knows how to do this work. He didn't even write down my name on a ticket, just my phone number on the key fob and I didn't ask for an estimate as I immediately trusted him based on our brief conversation about BMW's, business etc. I really thought I would have to drop the car off another day but he was not busy and gave me a ride home and completed the repair in a few hours. He called me and the bill was very reasonable. I will definitely use Mr. Kim at AK going forward on all my vehicles. Refreshing to do business with people like the old days!

I brought my Subaru Forester here for a routine oil change. They asked me if I wanted synthetic or regular oil. I told them I didn't know, I guessed regular. After I hung up, I was wondering about that, and I checked my manual and it said to use synthetic. So I called them back. They willingly changed it, and said that's what Subarus usually take, but they hadn't volunteered that information before. Everything else seemed ok. Soon after the service, we started having intermittent problems with our tire pressure light coming on. We probably should have followed up, but we didn't. For our next oil change, we took our car to a different mechanic, and mentioned the issue. He checked out the car and said our tires were extremely over inflated. Once he fixed that, the light hasn't come on again. Between the two visits, we returned to AK one more time to get the back windshield wiper replaced. He said he couldn't do it; only the dealership carried the wiper blades. We went to AK partly because the reviews were pretty positive and partly because we thought this is where our neighbor went. Maybe this mechanic is better if you are very knowledgeable about your car or assertive or something. But if you want easy, no hassle, no fuss service, go elsewhere.

This is my go-to auto maintenance and repair shop. The owner is Korean with limited English but it hasn’t been an issue. He will allow you to bring parts for installation as well. He is retiring in a few years and I’ll be very sad to see him go.
