I chose Capitol based on Checkbook survey ratings. It was the least costly of 4 bidders for tree trimming in my yard. The owner is an arborist and seems knowledgeable about trees. We did have a disagreement about a particular branch on a tree that I pointed out as needing removal but was not identified on the contract, I saw later. It took them a few minutes to take care of that branch but they charged me another $100. That rather annoyed me because while afterwards I raised the question very matter of factly and knew it was an error of identification on their part, the owner became defensive and borderline unpleasant. I attribute this in part to my own inability to name the tree species for each branch to be removed. Having said all this, they did a fine job overall and I would likely use them again, but this time being sure to make no assumptions. If I wanted a tree removed by them, I'd make sure every element of the work is specified in the contract. That is probably a good lesson for all tree companies, though in the past I never had this sort of problem. I think Capitol does good work and is very competitive in its pricing. Like most contractors, their advice on tree condition may be biased in a conservative direction given that approach may lead to more work. We have a large tree that has some squirrel holes about 40 up and they suggest removing the tree entirely. Well, if they didn't say that they'd perhaps be liable if it did fall, so who knows!
