Our 5-year old Kenmore freezer was not functioning properly. The motor would come on for long intervals. However, the temperature reading indicated that the temperature inside the unit was hovering between 14 and 20 degrees, rather than 0 degrees, where we had set the thermostat. We called Hallmark Appliance Service and a technician came to our house on 08/24/15 to look at our freezer. My wife said that, less than 10 minutes later, he emerged from our basement and told her that the condenser was shot. He said that the part was overheating and then shutting off to cool, thereby allowing the temperature inside the unit to rise. His recommendation was brief and straightforward - we should buy a new freezer, as the cost to replace this part would be nearly as high as the purchase of a brand new freezer. As I know nothing about freezers, that was good enough for me. It seemed to me that, only an honest repair person would suggest foregoing the cost of a repair. However, for whatever reason, my wife was not satisfied with this diagnosis. Maybe it was the brevity of his visit. But, she found it incredible that to replace just this single part would cost the same amount as a brand new freezer. So, against my objections (a second service call charge, don’t you know) she called Sears and had a technician come out, for a “second opinion”. Much to my amazement, this repair person was able to determine the root of what was causing the condenser to overheat. Behind the rather large amount of food we had in the freezer, he noticed an ice damn had formed at the lower rear of this supposedly “frost free” unit. This was keeping the newly cooled air from properly circulating and causing the temperature inside the unit to drop. He removed the ice and the unit now works perfectly. We didn’t even need a new condenser. They may very well be fine folks, and a good appliance repair shop overall. But, on this one, Hallmark Appliance Service dropped the ball.

Rick Hall returns calls the next morning, comes when he says he will, is knowledgeable and very pleasant to have in the house. He actually will repair things when possible instead of just installing a new part, and also gives good advice on which appliances have the best service record when we are planning to buy a new one.
