I wish there was a third choice besides "recommended" and "not recommended" called "depends on who provides the service". My husband broke a new extended valve on one of our tires. It is late on a Saturday and not many tire places are open on Sundays. But Mr. Tire is open. He takes the tire off the van and drives it to the Springfield Mr. Tire Sunday morning. I needed the van on Monday to help my daughter move from one apartment to another. We needed all the cargo space. The tire is fixed and $150 is charged. Very expensive. The next Friday or Saturday when I am back from my trip, I take the van back to the same Mr. Tire so the tire pressure management system (TPMS) can be reset to the new valves and the tire indicator light can be turned off. On this particular day the store was crowded and a balding man who I later learn is the assistant manager said I'd have to leave the van or wait about 4 hours. I had showed him the receipt and he said I'd have to pay about $68 more to get the valve system tied to the TPMS system. I told him for $150 that should have been included in the price. He said "no". Well I wasn't going to wait all day and he suggested I come back in the afternoon between Tuesday and Thursday when it is less busy. When I got back home I started googling up TPMS systems and reading the van manual. The tire indicator button doesn't do what I thought it did and my husband explained the new valves had to be re-synced with van's system. The manual mentioned "radio waves". I was not happy. I finally went back to the same Mr. Tire, but got lucky this time. At the counter was the assistant manager who I dealt with before and fortunately he was on the phone so the other gentleman helped me. I showed him the receipt and he remembered doing the tire. I asked him if the "re-sync" was included in the price already paid. He said "yes" and told me to pull the van up to a specific bay. I could tell the assistant manager who was now getting off the phone was perturbed when I dashed out to move the van up to the bay. I had to wait a few minutes - I think the two men were talking and the asst. manager was not happy with the tech for being honest. Any way the honest tech came out and re-calibrated the valves in about 2 minutes. That box they use and usually plug in below the steering wheel is used via radio waves apparently - he just went around to all 4 tire valves without the device plugged into the van. After the final tire was done, he then plugged the box into the van port and I think that part turned off the indicator light. Basically I didn't get ripped off (more than we already had been) because the tech guy was honest. My husband has also used the Mr. Tire in Merrifield and found them to be dishonest also. However, on a Sunday, there aren't too many choices if you have a tire emergency.
