Overall it was about a $100K project, so you would expect some focus and attention. Unfortunately HDE was beyond an unacceptable experience. They seemed really reputable during the sales process. In fact, their owner Jim Kanar was very professional and the main reason we selected HDE. But after the contract was signed and they deposited the 50% down payment, I never saw him again, despite asking multiple times for him to meet and resolve major issues.
Everything was delegated to the project manager, who missed every single deadline or commitment that he made. He would make mistakes and then try to convince me that it was what I had asked for, despite going back to the designs and drawings to show that it was not. When they did complete something, it was never right on the first or often every second try. The amount of rework, made you think that their labors were looking to increase their hours. At one point, they threatened to pull all their workers and leave us stranded, when I refused to make a milestone payment until they had resolved and completed more of the work correctly. We actually had to take a major part of the project away from them due to constant delays and poor quality. We pulled the kitchen remodel and gave it to another contractor, who did a better a better job and completed in 4 weeks, what HDE could not get done in 4 months.
In the end, HDE was fair and negotiated away all of the work that I had to pull from them, or they failed to complete. I will give them credit for being fair on the pricing. But overall it was a very painful experience.
If you really want someone who will be customer service oriented, and do what they say they are going to do when they say they will do it - go to Decor Floor & Kitchen in Sterling, VA. Ask for the owner "Ray." His company is outstanding.
