Grocery Stores Articles
Our ratings of local chains and stores report how each stacks up for price and quality. To compare prices, our researchers used a 154-item list of common items—and lots of energy—to shop area options. To evaluate stores on quality of products and service, we surveyed area consumers.
Amazon and several other well-funded companies are betting that, as with so many other types of purchases, lots of us finally will start using computers and smartphones to buy our apples and zucchini. There are now more grocery delivery options than ever.
We also compared prices at warehouse clubs. If you’re willing to buy in bulk, you’ll usually save using these low-cost alternatives to grocery stores—but only if you go often enough to justify their membership fees. And you won’t save anything if you throw out half of what you buy.
Our comparisons found Trader Joe’s prices were about 16 percent lower than the average prices at surveyed area stores. ALDI’s prices were an astounding 42 percent lower than the average prices at all surveyed area stores.
Prefer to buy organic? You’ll pay a lot more for it—on average, we found organic produce, meat, and dairy products cost 83 percent more than their non-organic counterparts. But at some stores, this organic-price penalty is higher than at others.
