I would use this roofer again, though I did have some issues with them. Our house has an added bedroom in the back and while the roof system is continuous, there is only a narrow attic passage from the main roof area to the rear roof area. They originally only installed one soffit vent in the rear area. I asked them to add another one and instead they added three, so I ended up with a total of 8 soffit vents. I have subsequently learned that these are not fire resistant soffit vents - - which is unfortunate, because we are not very far from the urban/wilderness interface and could greatly have benefited from installation of fire-resistant (fine mesh screen) soffit vents. I will admit that I didn't specify those in the work order, but they weren't suggested, either - in my opinion, in this era of climate change, those should routinely be offered by roofers serving the Oakland hills area. If I were to use them again, I'd make sure to specify ember resistant soffit vents. Otherwise, these folks did a good job at a fair price in a tidy and efficient manner.

As many homeowners, I was told in 2024 that my policy would not be renewed. One of the issues raised by my insurer was the condition of the roof. Engaging in back and forth with them did no good. So I opted eventually to get the roof replaced. I had some positive experience years before with Nicholas Roofing, and so I called on them to install a new roof. There was one complicating factor, in that I would need my solar panels removed and reinstalled. Nicholas was able to refer me to a solar company they had worked with in the past. The two companies made my life easier by coordinating their schedules. I was glad that I chose Nicholas. The team was friendly and worked well together, and it only took them two days to tear off the old roof and install the new one. Plus, if I have a problem in the future, I'm sure they'll be out right away to take care of it. I should add that I live in Berkeley and I try to do business locally when I can.

My household insurer tried to drop me asking for me to "replace the roof" (due to missing shingles) following their very shady "inspection." Nicholas Roofing quickly inspected their own work the day after I called them. They found and fixed one (count them, ONE) missing, wind-blown shingle. They came to the rescue by asserting that their work 14 years ago would last 25+ more years. This agrees with their original work contract (and with me). They gave me several before and after photos as proof, and provided a comprehensive report for the insurer.
