In preparation for some major energy work on our house, I contacted Eco Performance Builders for an energy audit. They were booked solid and I set up a date just before new years. In the end, I cancelled because the timing was off for me. I was going down this path because NONE of the HVAC contractors I had gotten quotes from was willing to do a Manual J and a Manual D calculation. Not one! So, I thought I'd go ahead and get a full, energy analysis of my home along with the Manual J and Manual D calcs from Eco Performance Builders. I corresponded extensively with Kyle and was very pleased with what he had to say. They know their stuff when it comes to current building science. And, their tests and evaluation could be very usefull. There was one nit though; cost effectiveness. It was made very clear that they were focused only on what could/should be done for better energy performance; what the building science would say. But, cost was not a consideration. For me, cost effectiveness, including operation and maintenance is an important part of the equation. For instance, I opted to not go with heat pumps rather than traditional A/C compressors in my HVAC replacement because our heating needs are small and because heat pumps thus far have shown a shorter life and higher maintenance costs than traditional A/C compressors. Based on my experience with Eco Performance Builders I'd gladly go with them in designing a new build. And I may still get them out to my house to do a complete energy audit. However, I would do so knowing that I would have to disreguard any of their suggestions that involved spending more on improvements than would be returned in energy cost savings with a reasonable life. Of course, according to the life expectancy tables, I haven't got that long to go anyway. So, that might factor into my metrics. :-)

Eco Performance Builders performed an energy audit on my home that was the most comprehensive report I have ever seen. It clearly identified areas of heat loss and made recommendations on how to correct the problems. I would highly recommend their services if you are considering HVAC upgrades in your home.
