The waiting area and public bathrooms are disgusting. Wait time at night is awful. Very unpleasant experience. I will only go back under life and death circumstances.

I waited 2 hours at Washington Hospital Center to be seen for something I waited 10 minutes for at George Washington University Hospital. Same emergency. My situation triggered flags and pushed me to the top at GWU. It's terrible that patients with real emergencies sit along side patients who have non-threatening emergencies or are shopping for medical assistance (i.e. not happy with regular doctor, go to ER! not happy with doctor diagnosis, go to ER!). The days I visited there weren't enough beds after triage. Folks all over the place, in beds, in chairs, few in private rooms, some with privacy curtains, and many/most without a shred of privacy. It feels like a police station and hospital all in one. You can see and feel the heavy police presence. Something I didn't see or feel at GWU which, like WHC, do not turn anyone away. The emergency room needs to be expanded to 3 times its actual size so most patients can be treated behind a door, panel, or curtain. After 8 hours inside, I wanted a cup of water - I was so thirsty - there's not a water fountain and I was told I could buy a bottle of water in the gift shop which was "down the hall, take a right, then go past..., then on the left", which, when you're in pain, is a difficult or impossible task.
