Let's start with the final cost for a new pair of glasses (lenses, put into my own existing frames) and contact lenses: over $1,800 at Lexington Optical. I have the invoices to prove it. If that has your attention -- They have installed a business operations model that unfortunately ensures excessive visits and charges, which my wife and I only understood after we both used them. They are in a very upscale area and promote a high quality image, and they do deliver quality - but at an eye-watering (no pun intended) cost and great inconvenience. My wife's experience is like mine, but I'll only relate mine here. I'm older, and have been wearing glasses and contacts for over 50 years. It was time for a vision checkup and probably a new set of contact lenses and glasses, and they had been recommended by someone where I worked so I thought I'd try them. But unlike other optometrists who provide end-to-end service in a couple of visits, they needed 4 separate visits (would have been 6 if I'd allowed it) to provide a set of contacts and put lenses into my frames. I was billed for most of these visits separately, None of this is explained up front when you make the first appointment: 1st Visit - Initial exam, with a technician (not an optometrist), then about 10 minutes with the doctor discussing your vision situation. I then asked to go pick out frames, but was told that was a separate section and I would have to call that that group and make an appointment (they couldn't even make it for me). 2nd Visit - A week later was the first opening for the frames & lenses group, so I went in to get them ordered. I gave them my existing glasses, to save my expensive frames. I also wanted to order prescription sunglasses, but when they quoted starting prices of $850 or up, I passed. I ended up without my glasses for two full weeks, but I had wanted to keep my frames. 3rd visit - Contacts: the first visit, to my surprise, did NOT include the prescription for contacts. It was left to me to call and make a separate appointment with their contacts specialist, only there two days a week. So, another trip and another exam. And another bill. 4th visit - I had to make another scheduled appointment with the frames/lenses after the glasses came back, just to pick them up. I understand they want to check the fit...but these were my own frames, needing no more than a minute to check, so I would have appreciated just being notified that they were in and letting me pick them up then instead of waiting for another appointment time Visit 5 - I actually passed on this visit: Was supposed to call and schedule another appointment when contacts were in, to check their fit. I asked them to be mailed to me instead, convincing the doctor I was fully capable of inserting them myself after wearing contacts for half a century. Visit 6 - I passed on this visit too: the contacts doctor wanted me to schedule a followup checkup. She was honestly only trying to do her very best for my vision health, without question. But I wasn't going to make another trip....and risk getting yet another bill. The two doctors I saw were very good. Indeed, the contacts specialist was surprised and a little distressed when I explained the multiple visits and the costs I was seeing. The frames/lenses people were less helpful, frankly a little arrogant. The desk staff never seemed to have the authority to be very helpful. The whole model of isolated sections - with multiple invoices coming one after another was explained in "Covid-required" terms. This is patently nonsense. You can have more than one person in an entire room, with masks and distancing, especially for brief tasks. I don't mind scheduling visits, but only ineffective management results in their total failure to coordinate activities for the benefit of their customers. Neither my wife or I will every be back, and we strongly advise using your local small-shop optometrist if they're rated well - same vision results, more prompt and convenient, and WAY less cost. FYI, my last (18 mos. earlier) glasses/contacts at a smaller shop provided the same services and results in two visits, for less than half of Lexington Optical's final total.
