I don’t like to write things like this, but I do feel compelled to warn people based on my experience with this firm. (Checkbook lists their two branches separately; I dealt with their Va. branch)... I use an accountant for only one simple income-tax task I face each year that requires unfortunately complicated forms. When my long-time accountant retired, I went with Turner, Leins & Gold on the recommendation of my financial advisor. Last tax season the draft return contained things that seemed to be erroneous; that's not unusual. The problems came when I pursued the concerns. I’ll use one to illustrate: There was a refund of state tax that had been deducted on a prior year’s return, and thus had to be included as income for the current year — but wasn’t on the draft return. I questioned this (and some other items) in an email to my TLG rep. As an amateur reluctant to bother tax professionals in the busy season, I sat quietly without a response for nine days; at that point, facing a tax deadline, I followed up. Her response (to this issue): “The amount does not get added to income.” Certain that this was wrong, I delicately re-raised the issue. Another response: “The [amount] does not get included in income as it was an overpayment that was applied [to future estimated tax] not a deduction.” I knew this to be wrong — and now had to spend time and effort to figure out how to get her to address the specifics she’d ignored in my email without sounding like a jerk who thinks he knows better than the pros. I took one last crack at it in an email as clear as I could make it; she said she would turn the matter over to the firm’s managing member. Two days later the TLG portal had a new version of the tax returns — with this apparent error uncorrected (and some new inconsistencies appearing). After another exhausting round of tactful-email wordsmithing and responses from the TLG rep that failed to even refer to the specifics I’d raised, I heard nothing for ten more days. I eventually called TLG’s receptionist to express my concerns (without a final return, I’d already had to write a check to meet an IRS deadline). My phone call finally drew another email from my TLG rep, who wrote “I have had 2 other partners review this return and everything should be in good order. Will be happy to amend free of charge after deadline if either IRS or [state] comes back with concerns.” (!) Stunned that she would repeatedly fail to address a client’s legitimate question in favor of deferring the matter until he got ensnared in the IRS discrepancy-processing bureaucracy, I emailed TLG’s managing member, who (now in the heavy part of tax season) responded with brief empathy; two days later he followed up, saying that they’d looked into it and made corrections to the returns (my concerns weren’t mistaken). Fifteen days later, I’d received no new versions of the returns; he emailed to ask whether I’d gotten them and I said no; six more days went by before I received them (with one more round of inconsistencies, eventually fixed). The only further communication from TLG was their bill — without comment, and for the full amount they’d included with the original draft before these headaches began. (Relative to the other accountants I considered, TLG seems to charge premium prices.) Perhaps they’re better with bigger clients.
