Manny quoted a price of $400 to install a window A/C, but gave me 10% off when I requested a senior discount ($360). I added a grab bar and 2 faucets, for which he quoted $900. He quoted a total of $1500. I asked how $360 + $900 came to $1500. He adjusted the total to $1260. He later lowered it to $1240. Our contract was for a window A/C, grab bar & 2 faucets. He requested $870 at the start of the job and $370 at the end. I said MD law allows a charge of only 1/3 of the total at the start of the job. He adjusted the payments to $413 & $837. I discovered that one faucet I wanted to replace was only 2 years old, so I wanted to delete it. Manny insisted that 2 years was "old" & there was a "leak" in the gasket. When I asked him to show me the "leak," he deleted that faucet. I also had to delete the second faucet, due to lack of a whole-house water shut-off. That left the window A/C & grab bar. Manny quoted a total of $750. When I subtracted $360 for the A/C, that left $390 for the grab bar. I asked how the grab bar could cost more than the A/C. He lowered the total to $600. I said $240 was still too high. He then lowered the total to $500. He applied weatherstrippingon 3 sides of my A/C. I confirmed with Frigidaire, the A/C manufacturer, that all 4 sides had to be weatherstripped. I asked him to caulk the exterior, which he had not done. He claimed caulking would damage the bricks if I ever tried to remove the A/C. I found out that rope caulk would not damage the bricks. He didn't volunteer this info. When he finished rope caulking, he threw the remaining 1/3 of the box in the trash. He had no right to throw out what **I** had bought. He said I had too many complaints; if I made him come again, he would charge me. But if he did the work correctly, he wouldn't need to come back. I had too much stress and waste of time, checking his work & arithmetic.
