I've taken my 88-year-old mother to St. Joe's ER twice within the past 12 months - once for extreme weakness and chest pain that turned out to be a pulmonary embolism, and once for a serious flu-like virus and dehydration that incapacitated her. Both times, we got excellent care in the St. Joe's ER. My mom has moderate Alzheimers and does not remember from one minute to the next what's going on or why she's in this strange place. The ER staff was so helpful in letting me accompany her throughout her ER experience and keeping her reassured and relaxed. The physicians, nursing staff, imaging staff, and everyone we've encountered have been kind, great to work with, and very thorough in figuring out the health situation and explaining treatment options. Both times, Mom ended up being hospitalized after the ER visit, and our experience with both the ER and the hospitalization was fantastic compared to other hospitals where I've accompanied family members, either locally or in other parts of the US. Since hospitalization is always a possibility with an ER visit, that part is very important to me too. I would definitely take Mom or any other family member to St. Joe's if the need for an ER arises ever again.

Very disappointed with efforts to find cause of pain and direct for appropriate treatment. Minimal, ineffective testing was done & staff was only interested administering (inadequate) pain meds and a quick discharge. Had to go to a different ER where correct tests were run and a decision was made to admit. 10 days in hospital followed that before xfr to transitional care. Will break 25 year relationship with HealthEast & find other, competent providers.
