Capital Caring Hospice sent out a nurse who spent a few minutes with me, the daughter of the dying patient, and a few minutes with the patient. The nurse told us, when we asked, that she would get an order for morphine for my mom. She left and we never spoke with her again. That was the sum total of our interaction with a nurse until my mom died about 5 days later. The nurse failed to get an order for anti-anxiety or sedative medication and also failed to get an order for atropine to decrease secretions. The last hours of my mom’s life she sounded like she was drowning in her own secretions. This was horrifying to us, to say the least. There was little evidence of caring by Capital Caring Hospice. No wonder the nurse manager of mom’s retirement community said they do not recommend Capital Hospice because they have only had bad experiences with them.
