I hired McCarthy to do the annual maintenance on my 8-year-old heat pump, which was working perfectly. The technician showed up late, one hour after the four-hour window. Shortly after he left, the system stopped working. I called the next morning and was told a tech would arrive shortly. The tech never showed up. There was no supervisor on site to deal with urgent problems, just people who answer the phone by reading a script.

We began using McCarthy several years ago when they bought out our previous HVAC company. What a mistake. They are trading on the goodwill earned by their predecessor. Their appointment windows are entirely too large and they still can't seem to turn up on time, holding you hostage all day if you let them. Every one of their technicians seem to be incentivized to sell upgrades and maintenance contracts and I have had a recommendation from one of them for replacement equipment that was clearly rated inferior in independent consumer reviews. I suspect that the urgency with which repairs are recommended has more to do with closing a sale rather than actual safety risks or likelihood of breakdowns. Only after replacing our furnace did I actually look at McCarthy's ratings on Consumers Checkbook. Believe the reviews and avoid McCarthy. There are many better choices for HVAC services listed in Checkbook.
