We hired Carrie for a challenging and unusual home remodel. We put her in charge after getting good reviews and being impressed by her ideas. We gave her our unusual requirements in writing but she didn’t grasp the implications and we didn’t realize how much she lacked. Her design was exceptional. If we’d kept her to carpeting, paint/wallpaper, draperies and store bought furniture we’d probably be very happy today. But the job extended into custom cabinetry, home remodeling, and electronics. In retrospect, she was beyond her depth and no one knew it.

For us, Carrie’s design was stunning but her implementation of the job was, at times, inept. For example, we insisted that the new carpet not go under the new permanent cabinet. She demanded that the carpet go under the cabinet so aggressively that we contacted our construction foreman for perspective. He gave us a few reasons why one should never put a carpet under a permanent cabinet calling it “construction 101.” Carrie never consulted any expert. She touted her credentials insisting that made her right. When we held our ground, she had a childish tantrum.

Carrie knew some products could cause life threatening problems and agreed never to use them. Knowing this and the contents of a product, she authorized its use in the name of “saving money.” When confronted, she lied about her knowledge and involvement. After eventually admitting to this action, her focus remained on her [rather than “how can I fix this?” and “are you okay?” it was “how can we be upset with her?”]

We had cost constraints yet she lacked concern for it insisting on her expensive choices while making little effort to reduce costs. When we discovered she used manufacturer list prices declaring them the best available for things like fabric or carpet, we stepped in for cost reductions. We succeeded using the Internet and negotiating between vendors but she resented it. She ignored our requirements when she didn’t like them and lied to us that she was following them. When things were delivered other than ordered, she blamed her supplier and walked away making no attempt to resolve anything.

When a supplier delivered something unpainted, she contracted with another supplier to paint it and expected us to pay again. She never held the supplier accountable to the order and couldn’t grasp that it was double billing. When we refused to pay twice for the painting she had another tantrum. In another instance, she asked for us to pay 100% for something never delivered [our mutual agreement was 70% down and 100% at completion]. When we refused, she screamed at us, threw her keys, and sped out of our driveway far too fast [we later discovered that she regularly screamed at the suppliers]. Her mistakes were so significant and resolution of them so poor that we ultimately fired her before completion which we find unfortunate because her ideas were truly amazing.
