I became a Cropp-Metcalfe customer when I owned a row house on Capital Hill in the early 1980s when the replaced a rooftop AC. I have stuck with them through a large Arlington home when my kids were school age through my present place in Southwest DC where I am retired. They were excellent for many years. But the decline in quality of service talent and customer service has been steep and deep. It took several visits last fall for CM to finally determine I needed to replace the AC unit they sold me 13 years earlier. Several scheduling screwups later, as AC season ended, they installed a new unit on my townhouse roof. (They always seem surprised that a 40 foot ladder is required for the job, as if I am the only customer in SW DC with a roof unit). A couple weeks ago, I got CM to install a Nest thermostat. It seemed to work ok, but after a few uses it stopped running anything but the fan. There is no cooling. I have a five hour window today waiting for a repair man to fix it. I hope he knows how to fix it for goid without multiple trips. When I called at 5:30 am the answering service woman seemed confused when I told her I lived in DC, asking twice what county that was in. She was not based in India or the Phillippines, but somewhere in Virginia. I finally spoke an hour later with Kathy at CM. She was very sweet, listened to my rant, and lined me up for service today. I told her there was at least one competent person at CM — her. It is very sad to see yet another DC area institution decline so. As a native, I know the corporate cemetery in DC is large. Only the folks at CM can decide if their many illnesses are fatal or curable. I hope they spend some money on staff and training and not just further expansion. They are too thin now.

The company that provided me and my oil furnace and air conditioner with service was purchased 9 years ago by Cropp Metcalfe. In all that time Cropp never revealed that they had stopped supplying service for oil furnaces and were sending untrained technicians who were not replacing the nozzles and filters which keep my system from shutting down. When the system failed in a cold snap in late winter 2017 the first tech said he didn't have the equipment to repair and didn't I know that Cropp Metcalfe hadn't serviced oil furnaces for at least 5 years? Another tech was sent when I called to complain. I eventually settled on compensation from them amounting to the 8 years of failure to service properly yet billing me for replacement equipment never installed and my entire 2017 contract fees. Avoid these people- they are not trustworthy
