My experience with Fred Home Improvement concerned fixing a leaking window. I was dissatisfied for the following reasons: // 1. The worker was not competent. His remedy did not fix the leak. He caulked under an eve, where there is no rain. After Fred’s repair failed I hired a subsequent contractor who caulked above the eve, where there is rain. As one might expect, Fred’s repair failed and the subsequent one succeeded. I thought I was paying (handsomely) for the judgment of a competent handyman, not someone to simply spread caulk. I understand that leaks are hard to find — but really, his first try was to caulk under the eve where there is no water? Seriously? // 2. The worker was unprepared. He spent about forty minutes of time I was paying for to go buy caulk. Who shows up to repair a window without caulk? And he bought the wrong color. // 3. The worker was painfully slow. For example, he stared for a long time, again at my expense, into the cargo area of his service van, not moving anything to get a better view, just staring, motionless, as if he were asleep on his feet like a horse. I think he was looking for caulk. I don’t think he found it. See 2., above. // 4. The worker was indifferent to my satisfaction. At the end of the two hours, during which the only thing he did was misdiagnose the problem, buy caulk, and spread it about 25 linear feet, I politely but frankly told him that I was dissatisfied with how long the job took. He seemed entirely indifferent. He correctly pointed out that he took no more than the minimum time, so it did not matter how fast he worked. I let it go, but wow was this guy slower than grade B maple syrup. // 5. The price was extremely high — about $200 per hour for a two-hour minimum. To be fair, it was higher per hour than a longer job because there are fixed fees, such as travel time. But it was still super-expensive even without including the per-job fees. And the per-job fees were quite high. // I suggest that others avoid Fred’s Home Improvement.

The quote I got, $54K for a gut and replace with no change of layout, was an insult. This did NOT include tub, vanity, tile, etc. Also, even for that price tried to convince me I did not need permits. Penny was condescending to me when I told her I wanted permits and acted like no other customer had asked such a thing. Horrible experience.
