Mr. Cortez has been a tremendous help in preparing my home for sale, skillfully and efficiently completing a wide variety of interior and exterior projects. He is a meticulous craftsman and his quality workmanship and expertise never disappoints. Examples of interior work include painting; replacing all caulking in the master shower; providing expert assistance in the selection of bathroom lighting fixtures; and most notably, designing the repair of a shower handle incorrectly installed by the builder, without this creative repair, it would have been necessary to move the pipes behind the shower wall at a cost of $800 to $900. Examples of exterior work include replacing the front porch bannisters, backdoor landings, and exterior wood trim; repairing a chronic leak under the siding, which had defeated many other contractors; and building a custom sized window screen.

Discovered Mr Cortez through Consumers' Checkbook and noted the enthusiastic reviews. They are deserved. He did numerous remodeling and home improvement jobs in our home over a two-and-a-half-month period. This included installing crown molding in the living room and dining room areas, strengthening and adding walls to the staircase leading to the basement, painting, improving the stability of the floor joists in the basement and replacing the doors to the bedrooms and basement. He provided excellent advice and recommendations and took care in his work. He never rushed a job and was ready to work upon arrival. We are very happy with the results and I am confident that his work added value to our home (as well as it making it more pleasant to live in). He had a good attitude and followed through with our our many requests. He was also honest as we occasionally had to leave the house to run errands or go work at the office. For many jobs he brought his friends Consuelo and Ruben to assist. They were pleasant as well. His charges were generally reasonable and had flexible payment requests. Note that he only accepts checks for payments. Because of the nature of the work and scope of given projects he had to leave much equipment and supplies at our home over many days but they were neatly stored. He purchased most of the supplies needed for the jobs but we occasionally purchased others, which he encouraged. One major complaint was that he arrived late most days (I define late as more than fifteen minutes from the agreed-upon arrival time). In fact the first day he was an hour late. He sometimes called ahead of time when he was running late but not always. Another complaint is that he would clear his calendar for our benefit but then at the last-minute say he was committed to another customer. I understand from his perspective that he doesn't want to lose other existing customers but we felt shortchanged, especially considering the many jobs we had for him. Also some jobs took longer than anticipated. But his work is so good that we let these slide. My advice is to get estimates for each project (which he normally prepares) and then get a commitment for short-term projects (say 1-3 days). Despite these shortcomings I recommend hiring Mr Cortez for your home improvement projects as he is a very skilled carpenter who takes pride in his work.
