Among high-quality surgeons, price is certainly a consideration. Most insurance companies consider laser eye surgery a cosmetic treatment, which means you’ll pay out of pocket.

Costs vary substantially from surgeon to surgeon. Checkbook’s undercover shoppers asked the staff of all the LASIK surgeons in seven major metro areas for the price of a single-vision correction for both eyes. Prices quoted ranged from less than $3,500 to more than $6,000.

We found it easy to shop for price. Call several doctors’ offices and ask whether the doctor performs LASIK, how many surgeries the doctor has performed in the past two years, the price—per eye or for two eyes—and what the price includes.
