Work done: removed old clay flue tiles, and re-lined 2 flues that were in one chimney with stainless steel tubes and insulation around it; re-did the mortar in the smokebox (above the firebox); laid a new mortar crown up top; repointed (ground out old decaying mortar and put new in) about 12 layers of the brick chimney; had waterproofing put on the bricks; put a large new stainless steel cap; and the 2 gas log sets were disassembled for the work, then reassembled and cleaned/serviced with new rocks. Our 2 fireplaces have gas log sets that were here in 1999 when we bought the house. Prior to the work starting, I had Winstons come and inspect the flues (level 1 inspection I think) for which I paid a fee. Winstons also tested the gas fireplace sets to make sure that the gas shut off quickly if the pilot went out. This was a safety feature I did not know about (luckily my old gas sets passed). They also took measurements to prepare an estimate for me. The inspection was inside and outside and they used a video that showed me the deterioration of the old clay tiles that lined the flues. I initially thought I only needed a new crown, but I had 3 companies come and inspect and give estimates. They all said that the flues needed replacement and the fireplaces were not safe to use in the current state (one was borderline and one was worse) because of carbon monoxide and the “products of combustion” were not being carried up the chimney. The 3 estimates I got were all for similar large amounts, but I felt comfortable with Winstons because they had a business license in Virginia, promptly sent me a copy of their active insurance, required a smaller deposit (1/3) than some other companies, are a reputable company that services gas sets, and they were happy to pull a permit with the County at my request (for an additional cost, roughly $350) and include in the contract that I would not pay the amount due until the inspection was passed. The workers were careful to keep the areas around the two fireplaces clean (there were some slight black stains on one carpet but I was able to clean them) and to clean up outside as well. They did the work in two days plus an additional half day to remove plastic and do the waterproofing of the chimney. I didn’t know about this addition half day, but it was not a problem for me.

I hired Winston’s after receiving several quotes to install a new wood stove from scratch. They were in the middle of the road for estimates but were the only company who didn’t try to steer me to a wood stove other than the one I wanted (which was from NZ). Their installation was neat as a pin and quite efficient. One crew worked on running the new “chimney” through my roof while the other was inside, underneath, vacuuming the debris falling through. That careful attention to neatness and detail carried through the entire job. I highly recommend Winston’s for wood stove installation. I wish I could add some photos here. The wood stove looks incredible and is a perfect touch in my home.
