i HAD A VERY SIMPLE TAX MATTER. THEY HANDLED PROMPTLY, DID AN OK JOB, AND CHARGED ME WHAT SEEMED TO ME LIKE A LOT FOR 30 MINUTES WORK (OVER $200).

This was our first time using a paid tax preparer, because last year our situation was a little more complex than usual. There seemed to be a lot of miscommunication in the process of preparing our returns; at the outset we answered all the questions in the new-client packet and added information we thought would be important. When we received our return for review, there were several errors apparently due to their not having read our responses to the questionnaire. There were also a couple of errors where the preparer had incorrectly assumed certain things about our situation; if he had simply asked us, we would have gotten it straight from the start. Overall, the process seemed as difficult as doing it ourselves. We felt we had to be the ones to think of everything so we wouldn't miss deductions, even though we had hired someone this time for that purpose.
