I had BQ give me an estimate to fix my basement water problem. They scoped out, very professionally, a huge project doing much more than I asked for or needed, at a very high cost. Then I asked them to revise the proposal for a smaller project. It still ended up being twice the cost of another basement water contractor I ended up using.

I called BQ because I had had an estimate from Terminix to put in a dehumidifier in the basement. The sales rep was out the next day and told me that it would be best if I installed a French drainage system around the perimeter of the basement. Cost was $25,000.00. He was very thorough and convincing and said that I could save 10% if I signed within three days. I spoke with one of my brothers who wondered why they were not doing it outside. The sales rep said that dirt and debris can clog the system and it was only guaranteed for a year. I signed. I had breakfast a few days later with colleagues and was discussing this situation. One of them told us that he had installed a French drainage system outside of his mom's house and used a type of piping that allows water through but not dirt or debris. I was concerned about this as it was contrary to what the sales rep had said. Someone I trust came to do some electrical work and I told him that I was going to have the French drainage system installed. He said that he had done electrical work on the house, and he did not believe that the system was needed. We went down the basement and he walked the basement perimeter. He asked me if water ever came into the basement and I said it only happened during Hurricane Floyd when water came up the drainpipe. He said that French drains were for houses that had puddles and floods. I wrote to BQ by email and told them that I wanted to cancel the work. The sales rep called the next morning and said that that was not possible as they had already ordered the materials for the job. I suggested that they could be used for another job and he said no because every job had specific requirements. I said again that I wanted to cancel the order and I requested a refund. This was all within a week of him coming to do the estimate. He said that he had a company meeting the following morning and he would bring it up with the managers. He called me the next day and said that that they had said no because it was not company policy. I told him that I did not want to have the work done. We were both very cordial and I hung up. I then called my credit card company and explained the situation. They communicated with BQ and allowed 30 days to receive an answer. When the 30 days were up, I wrote exactly what I what had transpired from start to finish and that I felt they had unduly alarmed me with pictures of water pushing against the basement walls and possibly causing severe damage. The insurance company ruled in my favor and refunded the @ $6000.00 deposit I had put on my credit card. I felt very foolish that I had listened to the sales rep. I found out when I read the contract word by word that I had had up to 30 days to sign. The thought of saving over $2000.00 by signing within 3 days was not a good idea. I have learned from my experience.
