The service technician, Latif, that Comfort Solutions sent to check out my air conditioning system prior to the start of a hot summer, allowed me to tag alongside him as he made his checks. I asked many technical questions as to how things worked and why he was doing certain things and not others (I am a retired mechanical engineer who wants to keep learning). The technician not only tolerated my presence and questions, but enthusiastically offered additional advice and experience from his 20 years of experience in the HVAC field. Based on his advice, I am planning to modify and clean a few parts of my system that I had not previously considerd.

We recently hired Comfort Solutions to install mini-split AC units in the dining room and two bedrooms of our old rowhouse. We are satisfied overall--the units are working well, and they are SO much more pleasant than our old window units. The staff was also polite and responsive and, for the most part, seemed invested in making sure we were satisfied. The only real issue was that they installed a pump with the unit in the master bedroom, since that room's position makes draining somewhat difficult. We had mentioned that we wanted the unit in the bedroom to be extremely quiet, and we don't remember being told anything about a pump when we discussed the plans. The pump was REALLY REALLY loud when they first installed it--it sounded like someone was trying to vacuum up a piece of paper. We didn't notice the problem until the installers had left our house, but they came back quickly the next morning after we called to complain. Service technicians installed some insulation that decreased the sound a little, but it was still unacceptably loud (especially for a bedroom). They seemed to imply that not much else could be done. After several nights of sleeping with the AC off because of the noise (which really seemed to defeat the purpose of installing it), we complained again and another technician came over. He agreed that the pump was way too loud and hypothesized that it might be defective. He installed a new pump and did a bunch of other stuff, and it's now tolerably quiet, though still not silent. So I guess we're basically happy with where things ended up, but we were frustrated that they initially installed an insanely noisy pump in our bedroom and took a while (and a couple of complaints) to fix it.

We had a replacement HVAC unit put into our condo. It's an unusual configuration, so we were pretty much limited to using the same manufacturer as the original (it is a brand I had never heard of before, they specialize in apartment and condo units). It took a while to get the first unit from the manufacturer, but Comfort Solutions kept us up to date, and the installation went smoothly. They did a test run of the heater, and there was noticeable odor, but we were assured that would burn off - which is normally true. The weather warmed up considerably, so we did not need to use the heater for nearly a month. Then the day it did get cold, I turned on the heater and 10 minutes later the smoke detectors were going off, with a nasty plastic smell in our unit. I called the service department, they suggested letting it run for while to burn off, but hours later the smoke detectors would still go off. While this sounds like a nightmare, I actually want to commend Comfort Solutions for working until the problem was resolved. They sent their top technician who found oil in a place it shouldn't have been, but they could not find any leaks. They tested the air quality, it was off the scale with particulates, and they began the fight with the manufacturer. Eventually the manufacturer agreed to a full replacement, and we got a new unit. Sadly, the first time we tried the AC, it did not cool! CS sent their top tech out the next day, he found the manufacturer had never charged the unit with any refrigerant. So while this brand of HVAC has been a nightmare, I can only say good things about the way Comfort Solutions has handled the whole sorry mess.
