Class instruction is very clear and precise, each step or combination is accompanied by demos. Participants change partners both during the learning process and practice time, ensuring that each person learns to accommodate the different nuances between different partners. This teacher uses different students as partners for the demos instead of having one permanent partner. Everyone gets a chance to dance with the teacher during the learning stage if they so desire. No one is forced to participate as a demo partner; student comfort seems to be a primary focus during class and during recreational dancing. Students are encouraged to dance with multiple partners so they can maintain their ability to adapt to different styles and different methods of leading/following. One thing that separates this teacher from the pack is that she really teaches the "leaders" how to lead: how to give the pressure and body position cues that communicate to the partner what will happen next. I have felt very comfortable in the beginner and low-intermediate classes. Also, students are not pushed to continue to pursue ever-higher levels of skill; if a student or a couple want to stop at a particular skill level and just continue to learn new combinations and moves within their achieved skill level, that is fine. Some dance teachers/schools push students to constantly move to the next level whether or not they feel comfortable continuing to move up the learning ladder. I appreciate that in a teacher. It demonstrates that the teacher is paying attention to the skill, comfort level, and desire to dance at whatever level makes them happy.
