Having no other experience, it's hard to say whether the "challenges" faced by Carroll Manor are common to all nursing homes. The impersonal, assembly-line approach may be understandable, but it's still quite discouraging. But at least no one appears to be mistreated at Carroll Manor, which is key. The rooms, even the non-private ones, are actually suites, with residents sharing only a bathroom. Both permanent and visiting pets (birds, a bunny, dogs) are located throughout the building. Residents can participate in regular outings, daily worship services, and a variety of holiday events and other activities. Even those with dementia are offered weekly "joyrides". The "auxiliary" staff (social workers, nutritionists, etc.) are friendly and kind; the lower-skilled staff members, less so. Cultural/ethnic diversity is rather lacking. I can think of many improvements, but this place could be a whole lot worse.
