Do not recommend for anyone wanting more that cleaning, laundry and adequate food. As one resident recently said at dinner: "Henley (the Executive Director) is as unethical, as mean, as abusive, as manipulative and lacking in empathy as Trump." Look that Tax Form 990 and under staffing problems are explained by the 23% to 30 percent profits being extracted by Johns Hopkins/Sibley from this not for profit Assisted Living Institution. Residents remain because of the high quality and warmth of the residents, as the residents work together to fight for better treatment. Read past licensure surveys on the DC Department of Health website.

For 2 1/2 years my mother lived there. First, get it straight, Grand Oaks is not a licensed nursing home although they tried to be. There is an Alzheimer unit and Skilled nursing at Sibley hospital.
Many lawsuits by individuals where the high cost was not an issue for this for profit "cash cow" for Sibley Hospital that seriously failed its DC Health Department inspection a few years ago. The head nurse and Excutive director were "let go" but their tortious behaviors are still being practiced elsewhere in the metro area. As with doctors, nurses have a board of registry that covers up their malpractices. The DC Council is now slowly changing the laws in DC to address problems brought to their attention by both residents and family members. Currently the independent and assisted living Grand Oaks facility is not regulated by the federal government, like nursing homes. The focus is on curb appeal and food. I am told that as of 2018 the vast majority of residents are around 90 in age. Not a good place any more for independent living and the senior management has cut back on resident nurse to banking hours, not 24/7. The cash cow has a tendency to dump residents on the Sibley's ER without licensed RNs making the proper triage.
