Limiting my search to 14K gold necklaces, I used a metric of price per gram (yes, I shopped with a pocket-sized electronic gram scale). Although the selection was very limited, Costco's prices were easily 50% or less on a per gram weight basis than the "traditional" jewelry stores at Yorktown in Lombard. I conclude it must cost a lot to keep those mall palaces open. The necklaces I bought at Costco were $30.30/g and $53.62/g vs a high at Zales of $156.09/gr. The gold content of 14K metal, using a spot price of $1500/troy ounce, is worth $28.14/g. A 10K (only 42% gold) at Rogers&Holland at $69.37/g suggests a metric of (retail price/g) divided by (cost/g of gold content). It would be interesting to see if Costco vs "retail" pricing extends to other jewelry items.
