I waited from 12:00-4:00pm to be seen by a physician at 4pm was seen behind emergency room doors by physician and examined, given prognosis and told that I'd be admitted ....I waited from 4pm till after 7pm to be assigned a bed. In the meantime a medication was hooked up to be given to me.I was warned that the way the medication was introduced to my system would more than likely burn as soon as it hit my veins. Well surprise, 30 seconds later my arm was on fire, I used the call button for help, when the nurse comes she acts like I'm overreacting when I explain to her the medication is causing me pain. This time the nurse adds a second bag of medication to the first but the 2nd bag runs out first. This time I resort to self help and stop the flow of the medication myself, then I push the call button for the nurse. When she came and I explained why I had rang, I literally could see her eyes roll in her head,I explained to her that the medication that burned and the one that was given to mix it with were not equall because one( the mixer) ran out first and my arm was on fire, that I stopped the I.V waiting on her arrival the nurse acted as though I should have waited and let it burn my veins from the insides until she got there to stop the medication !(No, I don't think I'm obligated to stay in pain just so the nurse can come (when she decides to) to change I.V bag. I do finally get assigned a room afer 7:30pm that night. The nurse on duty comes to check me in and do her rounds. While we are talking the nurse actually sticks her hand inside my purse (that is sitting on the bed in front of the both of the us) and takes my prescription medication. The nurse doesn't ask before she does this, she just goes in my purse. How dare you ! What gives you the right to go in my purse and take anything. Then spout some explanation about hospital rules. This nurse felt as though she was privileged, that because I was an African American woman, I had no power, no rights that are afforded white people. I felt powerless, I explained to the nurse my husband didn't dare go in my purse,What gave her the right to go in my purse and take out what she ⁸ and explained after the fact ? I wonder if I was a white woman would this nurse been so quick to take away what ever rights allowed me. If I had been asked the correct way about my medications, told about the hospital's policy there would not have been a problem. To add insult to injury when the next shift came on duty the nurse briefed them on my case in front of me and told the on coming staff that she had to confiscate my medication. I was so upset ! Implieing that I had not willingly given it to her, which I didn't, but that was not how she got possession of my medication. I was let out the next morning and attempted to make a complaint with the head nurse on the floor. The first nurse thought my complaint was over her head so she referred me to a second nurse who explained that she was just filling in until after the hoilday was over but she would pass along the information. I never heard back from the hospital any resolution to my complaint.
