My A/C cooling air volume started to drop in July 2018 (unit was installed in 2011). I heard a squealing noise coming from the fan blower area. A technician came by on the date of the appointment to examine the system. He checked the inner coil, fan blower unit, and outside compressor. He diagnosed the problem to be low refrigerant from a possible leak and that caused the blower fan to run at a lower speed. He added back 3 gallons of refrigerant and tested the system. The A/C unit returned to normal operation. The technician recommended that a leak test be performed to determine where the leak was occurring. I decided not to make an appointment for that until later. The cost of 3 lbs. refrigerant with the diagnosis charge of $120 came out to over $700. The technician provided a refrigerant discount and a senior discount which dropped the total price to below $600. The previous A/C unit rarely had refrigerant issues (used for 17 years) so do not know if the replacement unit is defective. You need to be certified to handle refrigerant chemicals, so cannot do the replacement work yourself.

Technician misdiagnosed gas furnace fault, claiming a partcular part was faulty but without actually testing it; he also missed a diagnostic indicator which clearly indicated the nature of the problem. He quoted repair cost around $2000, including about $800 for a part that could be purchased for $150 from a supply warehouse price. Technician offered a “discount” on a new furnace; surprise, that. Paid about $100 for this incompetent or sham “diagnosis.” Technician from another contractor quickly and inexpensively repaired the furnace for about $300 including labor and new part. Even when presented with evidence of misdiagnosis, ARS refused to refund their fee.
