We live in a small ~1890 wood-frame house with a very steep gable roof. The house was moved a short distance to its current location in 1911. There is no masonry foundation. Wooden foundation beams are supported on brick pillars, with a few inches of ground clearance. There was no basement; the crawl space below the first floor was insufficient. When side rooms were added many years ago, the roof became more complex. Rain leaks coupled with lack of ground clearance led to significant wood decay over the years. In 2022 Matt Taylor excavated the original house to a ground clearance of about 4 feet. He installed concrete footings, steel posts, and pressure-treated beams to support the house foundation beams. The side rooms have low slope roofs with roll roofing, and one roof was significantly curved. In 2024 Matt Taylor rebuilt this roof to a greater slope to accept shingles. He added some concrete support under the side room, and replaced a side-room wooden foundation beam. He also extended the 2022 repairs adjacent to this side room, with additional concrete footings, short wooden posts and pressure-treated beams. Matt Taylor is an excellent resource for restoring older buildings that do not follow current building codes. At times he is quite busy.
