I found Edelman Financial Engines through Checkbook.org after years of trying to get someone to help with my finances. Edelman was my 5th attempt to get someone to help me make a financial plan. I scheduled a meeting with Bob Sargent in Edelman’s Ashburn office. I had a few basic questions that were keeping me up at night, such as confirming a retirement target date and determining how much I needed to earn to make that date. Bob was patient and non-judgmental. He asked intelligent questions that helped me support the decisions I needed to make. Over a few weeks, I provided my financial information to Bob, and he ran it through the company’s projection tools. We met again and he provided me with 3 retirement date options, along with all the accompanying financials of monthly investment growth and expenses. This was at no cost to me. (I didn’t know this walking into the appointment. I assumed that I would be paying at least $1k. It would have been worth it.) Edelman makes their money managing other people’s money, and I had no interest in that, because of a few prior very bad experiences letting anyone touch my money. I told Bob my stories, and he did not try to pressure me into buying their services at all. So, for what it’s worth, if you have financial questions that you need answered, I would recommend Bob Sargent at Edelman if you want a frank, no-pressure conversation about future financial plans and goals.
