I'll start by saying that having Adam Garage Door do our repairs was an excellent experience (I'll end that way, too!) I called them because one of the springs that pulls up the door had snapped. He gave me a reasonable estimate over the phone. I didn't call until about noon and I was going to be out during the day, so he offered to come at 5 or after. I later realized that I would not be home by 5, either, so I texted him to say that it would be all right if he came the next day, but he kindly offered to come at 6--I was glad I could still get the work done the same day! He said that if one spring had snapped, he should replace both because the other spring would probably break soon. He replaced both springs, all four cables, and the pulleys for each side--all of this he included in the original estimate ($220). My husband thought maybe the springs on the other side of the garage should be replaced also, but Elayen (he is the owner of the business) looked at them and said they were fine. However, when he checked the motor on that side (he took a photo of it to show me) he said that it will not last much longer, unsurprising since it is 17 years old. He also lubricated the tracks on both sides of the garage with silicone spray and replaced a bulb in the motor light that we thought had a faulty socket but made it work by tweaking the contact. All this was still included in his original estimate. I did pay him a little extra to have the astrogal strip at the bottom of the door replaced, since he had a replacement strip on the truck. Pleasant guy, very good about explaining what he was doing. I'm always trying to learn about how things work so I watched the whole process--if it drove him crazy he didn't let on. I expect we'll be calling him soon to replace that motor, hopefully before that gear corrodes completely, because this was an excellent experience.
