The chimney on my house was struck by lightning which resulted in extensive damage to the chimney and roof. My insurance company selected Paul Davis of Northern Virginia located in Ashburn, VA, to complete the restoration work. This project has been plagued by problems and delays from the very beginning. It took five (5) months to tear down the existing chimney, replace damaged plywood caused by falling brick, rebuild the chimney, and install new shingles. Paul Davis initially hired a tree cutting service company to tear down the original chimney. The tree cutting crew was, in my opinion, totally ill prepared and not equipped to tackle a project of this magnitude which caused additional delays and damages (additional costs). Another subcontractor was called in to complete the tear down. Problems then arose when Paul Davis-Ashburn personnel selected the roofing shingles and chose the wrong color shingles (they chose a shingle with a grey cast vs a tan/brown to match shingles on the remaining roof). They claimed the color of their shingle was "close enough." Moreover, when the roofing supply company delivery truck (with big boom lifting arm) delivered the shingles, the weight of the truck and load caused more than a dozen major cracks in my driveway where none previously existed. I was told by the owner of Paul Davis Restoration-Ashburn that "those driveway cracks were there when we purchased the house 4 years earlier and just never noticed them." More than a year elapsed when Paul Davis-Ashburn, having completed no additional repairs on my house, requested payment for $3876 for work they claim they already completed. Paul Davis-Ashburn never provided details or an explanation outlining what work had not been paid but threatened to turn the matter over to a collection agency when I balked at their request payment. When I asked when Paul Davis Ashburn would complete the remaining work, they sent an estimator to determine the scope of work that needed to be done and obtain update repair costs. I obtained a revised estimate 3 months later and then only after I contacted the company owner inquiring about the revised estimate. Throughout this project, Paul Davis Ashburn has been extremely slow to complete work on my project but they are eager to get paid. Since sending the revised estimate, they have repeatedly requested I sign paperwork agreeing to provide additional draws (funding) for the project. In light of my experience with Paul Davis-Ashburn, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND POTENTIAL CLIENTS CONSIDER OTHER COMPANIES IN THE AREA TO WHEN HIRING A RESTORATION COMPANY. I can provide additional details but wanted to touch on the high points for brevity.

Paul Davis is a franchise. Each company address is a completely different company. These guys in Ashburn were selected for us by our Insurance company. They were personable, and after a water leak, they were quick to tear up our house and dry it out. However, our view is that their remediation team did as much or more damage as the water leak itself did. And their estimate for repairs was, in our opinion, inadequate to restore the home to its pre-damage condition. And their restoration contract had enough small-print and exclusions to absolve them of blame for any damage and for failure to complete the work within budget and on time that you could drive a train through the holes. We let them do the water remediation because we had little choice. We hired our own contractors to do the restoration and never looked back. We're glad we did it that way.
