I am still trying to resolve billing for a TERRIBLE job on my gutters by Action Sheet Metal. I'll describe a bit of what happened below, but bottom line: AVOID them for gutter work - they didn't do the work themselves, their subcontractors are awful, and their customer service was abysmal when I tried to get someone to deal with the (completely avoidable) problem.

So, what happened? After reading all the great reviews here, I called them in late October (2010) to ask for someone to check the bent and sagging gutters on my townhouse, and whether they could be repaired, since that is much cheaper than replacement. I was initially very pleased when I got called back and told the job could be done for $250. We also talked about gutter guards, and I was told that would only add $50. $300 sounded very reasonable and I authorized that work to be done. I also asked what it would cost to replace the neoprene collars on two pipe vents while they were on the roof (3 stories up), since the seals were leaking and gutter repair guys often do that kind of job while they're way up on the roof. The local gutter cleaner charges $65/vent pipe for that. I was told I'd get a call back with a quote on the pipe collars.

Well, I never got a call back and the next time I had contact was when a truck pulled up, unannounced, and two guys got out to install gutter guards with no intention of fixing the gutters themselves - the original reason I called them. Their truck had another company's name on it (as did their work shirts) and they didn't even know who at Action was in charge of the job, since I wanted them to call Action and get this cleared up. After a bunch of back and forth, I called the main Action office myself and was told the "gutter guy" would call me right back. While I was waiting for that call, I watched the workers slap up some gutter hangers without checking whether the gutters were going to even drain properly. Since I had to be somewhere else and they hadn't called to let me know they were coming, I couldn't stay to watch them finish and see whether they got the back side of the townhouse done right. When I called Action back during normal business hours, I was told someone would check the work - I was very concerned - and get back to me. Never happened.

Now they've sent me an invoice for $500, for the $300 in gutter repair they didn't seem to do, and $200 for pipe collar replacement that I didn't authorize because I never got the phone call with a quote!! What a mess.

Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY from this company. Some people may get good service from them, but this is about the worst contractor experience I've ever had in Northern Virginia.

I have an older house and have worked with a lot of contractors on a wide range of repairs. I generally get along with them, particularly when I find someone with good reviews in Consumer Checkbook who does a great job. Based on the reviews, I was expecting a good experience with Action, but I was sorely disappointed.

Only company willing to do a relatively small job. Very pleased with their work.
