I had Salmon Bay install at 1700 sq ft paving stone driveway for my home. My old driveway was badly cracked with settling of concrete near a retaining wall. I ended up with multiple bids starting with a door to door salesman from System Pavers. System Pavers subsequently sends out an individual specifically to give a quote. They claim to offer discounts, free demolition, etc, but their final quote was by far the most expensive. Most of the quotes were in the range of $15-16 sq ft plus demolition costs. All contractors seem to favor pavers from Abbottsford or Western Interlock. We went with the latter. I think some installers prefer Abbottsford because their contractor discount is greater but the quality is similar. Salmon Bay quoted $10 sq ft + demolition costs. It is very important to pay attention to the crushed rock/gravel/GeoTech fabric foundation proposed by the contractor and all but one proposed a similar base. The demolition in our case was complicated by the steep hill we live on, limiting access, and the thickness of the concrete in parts, perhaps because it had been refloated by the previous owners. The Salmon Bay crew were impressive in their attention to detail, and seem to have done a very thorough job, aligning the stone the way we wanted, paying attention to drainage, etc. We did run into a cost overrun of about 6%, which we accepted because of the difficult demolition job. The only real negative was that the amount of pavers ordered was not enough for the job which resulted in having to have an additional two palets delivered at extra cost. The demolition/installation also took longer than originally forecast because of these issues. All in all, I would highly recommend Salmon Bay because of the 5-6 installers we interviewed, they were by far the cheapest, pleasant to work with and did a very good job. I suspect that in most installations, one would not run into some of the relatively minor issues we did. I had to do some minor clean-up after their departure. Most of this was related to gouges in the gravel from trucks on our steep hill and a small amount of debris.
