Transferred here from the Wisconsin Avenue Crunch gym and although OneLife is a much larger facility it also seems much busier, although I never have a problem accessing the equipment I want. The facility is kept clean, the cost is reasonable, and the equipment well-maintained,

Onelife Tenleytown is very large and takes some getting used to; it has an impersonal feel, quite honestly. You need to sign up in advance for all classes and pool time. However, once you learn your way around, there is a large variety of fitness equipment and areas to work out, and some very good classes with excellent, experienced teachers. The pool, locker rooms and recovery room are nice to have and always clean.

Note: the location of this facility has changed. It is now at 4000 Wisconsin Ave. NW and is about 4+ times larger than it was on Brandywine NW. This creates pros and cons: there is infinitely more equipment and trainers (to be hired at additional cost). There are special programs, such as one for boxing. They have rehabilitated the pool (from the old Sport & Health gym that existed there before and around which this new one was built) and expanded the locker areas and specialty options. However, there is now a huge clientele, the gym is almost always full and certain machines and classes are in high demand. As someone who joined its predecessor gym in the late 1980s, I miss the greater sense of community i had then but do feel that I can get a good workout for a very reasonable price.

Before Joining a Gym, Exercise Your Options

Before joining a gym, think about your own motivations and interests—and consider alternatives. Set realistic fitness goals, then think about whether you really need to pay a company big bucks for activities that are probably available more cheaply elsewhere.

How to Avoid Getting Burned by a Gym Membership

Membership at many clubs doesn’t come cheap. Although some bare-bones gyms cost about $200 a year, many charge more than $600. Want a club that offers racquet sports or a wide range of facilities and amenities? Expect to pay a lot more.
