Huge selection of products, with frequent sales. Finding help can be difficult, but most staff are quite helpful in giving information on products.

Menards is a "big box" hardware store and home center. More recently, they have expanded their lines of "while you are out, grab me a - - - " items, such as milk, soups, cereals, canned drinks, frozen pizzas, and snacks. While employees span the gamut of experience, I have always been able to find a knowledgeable employee when I really needed one, especially in Electrical, Tool, and Paint departments. A couple of men specifically in the upstairs Planning Center are also excellent at their positions, and are typically offering a friendly "hello" to customers. If you know what you want, you can look it up on Menard's web site, although searches thereon don't always come back as you would expect. If you are looking for "wood screws" and put in just "screws", you will get a response featuring screw jack posts, car screw jacks, machine screws (ie bolts), in addition to lag screws, finish screws, washer head screws as well as wood screws, per se. It helps to know specific terms for the items you need. I always write down the SKU numbers of items I need. I give the SKU to the employee, they find the product. Menards has typically had a price advantage over other home centers such was Lowes, and Home Depot, but lately, this difference has been dwindling. In fact, with Menards having a low supply of certain decent wood cuts- 1x4x8's primarily- I found better stock at matching or better prices at HD. Menards likes to keep shuffling things around, which is one big issue I have about all their stores. Certain departments are "well anchored" in their places such as Paint or Electrical. The Seasonal area is always in a state of flux- that's a given- but there are other areas that really seem to migrate more than they would have to. HD, for example, does a better job of keeping related things together, helpful when you are working on projects. And HD's "free free cuts" on wood saves me 70-80% of my time in cutting wood for my needs. If you want a wide assortment of products and qualities, and aren't afraid to do a bit of walking to find them at reasonable prices along with an employee to help you, Menards can be a good choice for you.
