We had a problem with rats in our 6-unit condo building. Mike from Atlantis (who I assume is the owner) came over, did a thorough inspection, and determined where the rats were hanging out (in various places in our basement garage) and what their potential ingress points were (through a drainage hole, through an unscreened vent, and under our garage door). This inspection took about an hour or two and was done by him without any guarantee we would engage him.

Atlantis believes strongly in using traps to catch rats, not using poisoned bait. Mike's feeling was that we really didn't want rats slinking away to die in our walls, where they would smell really bad for a long time. (City rats are big animals.) This was a feeling that resonated with our condo association members, especially with the one who was trying to sell his unit at the time! He also placed great emphasis on eliminating the rats' entrances, which he did. (I should mention that he worked with our condo management to fix the garage door. He refused to do it himself because he was afraid of causing a problem with the automatic door. The other entrances he fixed himself with screening.)

The other two exterminators we talked with both used baiting, and did not seem much interested in closing off the rats' entrances. Although they were cheaper initially, they wanted to sign long-term contracts, which I guess would have been necessary if we didn't close off the rats' entrances. We had no interest in a long-term relationship with the rats, and we thought the expense over time might be as much or more.

Atlantis did the work this fall. He caught a few rats with the first set of perhaps 18 traps. After that we saw no more rats until a couple of weeks later when another rat was seen. The traps he set then caught one rat; after that we were rat-free and are still rat-free in the spring. (NOTE -- The traps are in metal boxes so as not to be a danger to children, pets, or clumsy people like me.)

I would heartily recommend Atlantis.
