Expensive, inexperienced, slow, little attitude of customer service. The worker who came to fix a leak in my window looked around and incorrectly concluded that an area under an overhang that does not get rained on (unless horizontal in a hurricane) was the only possible place for there to be a leak. (A subsequent contractor caulked above the window, where there is rain, and that fixed the leak.) I recall that the fee was around $400, more or less, for the two hours (two hour minimum). I agreed to that price because it is very difficult to find handyman services. I think that this company knows that, too, so there may be no shortage of first-time customers. They advertise a lot in the newspaper. This fellow moved incredibly slowly. He stared for a good ten minutes through the back door of his van, looking for something; he did not move anything to look; he just stared. Then he spent about 40 minutes to drive to buy white caulk (perhaps because his staring did not find any in his service van). He bought the wrong color. Who shows up to fix a leaking window without caulk? He finally finished caulking a line of about 25 feet after all the staring and buying and dithering was done, by the end of the two-hour minimum trip. I told him that the simple work he had done too long; he was disinterested and simply pointed out the two hour minimum. No matter how hard it is to find handyman service, I would choose a different company, or forgo the repair, rather than use Fred Home Improvement again.

FRED is the best handyman service I have found in 20 years. The helpful and friendly service consultant I worked with, Joe Rocco, is very knowledgable about all routine maintenance, upgrades, replacements, modernizing, and unique problems arising from house ownership. He discusses the various solutions and costs available. Costs are always reasonable in comparison to other providers. The projects are completed efficiently. Last year I had my basement entry and areaway renewed, including replacement of damaged concrete stairs, loose bricks lining the top of the entry way, lowering of the new landing at the bottom of the stairs, repairing cracks in the area way and parging the walls, plus installing a new PVC pipe to connect to the existing downspout and run underground away from the house. The work was done efficiently by subcontractors who left a clean, renewed basement entry, in a very short period of time. I also my roof and gutters replaced, including installation of a new ice and water shield underlayment and new underlayment on the remaining rooftop, new flashing for the chimney, and new aluminum drip edge at perimeter, replacement of two short gutters with downspouts, etc. The work was done efficiently, and the cost was reasonable. The FRED service also provides a 5 year guarantee for their work.
