We requested an estimate for a Kohler Luxstone shower remodel and were directed to Remodel USA. The salesman was friendly enough but his sales tactics were sleazy. After a very long presentation, he provided an absurdly high initial estimate, which he then immediately lowered by thousands of dollars. Next he "called his manager" and lowered the price some more, but only if we signed a contact right then.

Only contact with RemodelUSA was pleasant salesman who spent 90 minutes in our home discussing our needs, Visit ended with quote and major discount if we signed up before he left. We did so. Then with time we check the contract and saw that it was very totally inadequate in specifying a rather complex bathroom remodel. It would have been totally inadequate as the basis for settling any inadequacies of performance, a likelihood that we discovered during review of customer ratings and comments on Checkbook and BBB. We quickly cancelled within three days of quote without and difficulties.

We are looking for a replacement rebuild for our storm-damaged sunroom and have spoken to a number of companies. There seems to be two types of contractors for this, the kit companies and the traditional, or 'stick-build' rebuild. The kit builders likely have a quality product but they seem to rely more on sales commissions so their product is more expensive. They also face the issue of assuring homeowners that if something goes wrong that they will fix it, as these are from kits and cannot be repaired by most traditional contractors. remodel USA (at least orally) seems to have resolved this issue as they guarantee their work (material and labor) for life. This is from the oral testimony of the agent. We will not be buying their sunroom so we will never know. The kit builders tend to want both spouses present for the meeting (none of the stick-builders have) and I think it is for one reason. The sales pitch. There is a high expectation that you will make a decision during the pitch and they don't want to leave you with the "I have to discuss things with my spouse" way out. Well, like we were going to make a $125,000 decision at the spur of the moment? This is what I said to her. At the beginning of the pitch she said we would get a special discount if we decided today (another warning to stay away) and I was waiting for something big. It was for just $5,000. She brought up the cost to value comparison and this was supposed to be a big selling point, but I still don't think she understands it. A 47% ratio means that you can be expected to recover only half of your costs in the sales price of your home. She actually put sunrooms third, behind bathrooms and kitchens, which hover around 70 - 80 percent replacement value. A sunroom is not what you buy to increase the value of your house, but ours had one when we purchased it and now it was destroyed. Then, we had to sit there and watch her do her calculations and wonder why she doesn't have an excel spreadsheet that can do this. There is magic about this process that I really don't like. Don't tell me it will take $20,000 to remove our old sunroom for example and then expect me to take your word for the rest of the costs. At the beginning of the pitch she said she didn't want us to say maybe, just yes or no, and she would respect our decision. So I said no and repeated what she had said and she just kept going and going. She was in our house for 2 hours and 53 minutes. I am really impressed by the windows that these kit builders have, and will try to get them into our stick-built sunroom but this is just too high pressure for such a big decision. I would steer clear from this company and I have already blocked them from my phone as I am sure they will call. Not too distant from the time-share and vacation pacation sales approach in my opinion.
