We hired Shimizu Landscape to totally redo our quarter-acre lot in Bethesda, including design, hardscape, and extensive plantings. At the time Bevan was taking over management from his father Osamu. While the Japanese-contemporary design presented was lovely, project oversight was poor. Practically all the work was to be done by the Shimizu crews. However, they were not adequately supervised; and multiple mistakes were made, for example, in grouting a large flagstone patio. Bevan never checked to see if work was completed, much less completed well. No responsibility was taken for mistakes, such as when the crew pulled out and discarded all the survey stakes. When we insisted on getting cost estimates for phases of the project, we discovered that specialized firms, such as arborists, charged less than Shimizu for the same task. In addition, whenever Bevan felt he had underbudgeted an ongoing phase of the project, he argued for more funds before completing the work. Initially Bevan said Shimizu could handle all aspects of the project, including irrigation and lighting. Late in the planning process when we started to ask how he would tackle this work, he admitted the work was too complicated for his company. Tasks were not completed in the time-frames promised; and the crew was pulled off to start and complete small-scale, simpler projects. After a frustrating, expensive year, we cut our losses and hired another landscape designer.
