We contracted with Powell and Graves to paint seven townhouses in a homeowners association. Everyone in the company from painters to foreman to owner was extremely pleasant to work with. They fit their work schedule to the schedule of the individual owners. The quality of the work was terrific. We have worked with a number of companies in the past, some bad, some good. Powell and Graves is very good. This was for exterior work on the houses, but even for that, it is vital to have painters who are friendly and know what they are doing. All the owners were quite pleased with the company.

I’ve owned my house in Chevy Chase for 44 years, and Powell & Graves is the finest painting company I’ve encountered. The people who run it are enormously invested in the quality of their work, tremendously involved in its progress, remarkably eager to make sure that it’s done right, flexible, reliable, knowledgeable, creative, decent, honest and responsive. Moreover, since Powell & Graves is a subsidiary of Evcon, which does general contracting, and which is run by the same people, it has access to craftspeople with the kinds of skills often needed in completing a paint job—plastering, carpentry, floor refinishing, plumbing, roofing, etc. Despite their high quality, Powell & Graves is also, in terms of cost, extremely reasonable—not least because it was, a few years ago, purchased by young owners who are eager to establish their company through repeat clients and willing to accommodate to the financial needs of those with whom they hope to work in the future. My recent project was the painting of the exterior of my large stucco house. Knowing that this would be an expensive project, I obtained five estimates. The initial estimate by Powell & Graves was considerably higher than the ones by other highly-recommended painting companies. However, because I was very impressed by the professionalism, expertise and responsiveness of the persons who run the company—Ali Naim and Dominik Piwowarski, as well as the estimator and manager, Rolando Marias, who is very involved in making sure that the work is done properly, on time, and with the correct materials—I asked them if they would match the lowest cost. I did this also because I called their references, all of whom gave stellar recommendations. After considering their costs carefully, they agreed to my proposal in the hope that this job would engender future jobs. And I’m delighted that they did. Their crew, made up of painters who have had many years of experience, came exactly on time, worked very carefully, were in constant communication with the owners, and informed me of any problems that they discovered that had to be addressed (such as a crack in the stucco in an area I couldn’t see, and problems with the wood of a screen door that they had to repair). At least once a day, one of the owner/managers would come by to check on the progress of the work. Moreover, they were always available by cellphone or by email. Occasionally, they would, on their own, do more work than originally planned, without charging me more, in order to achieve the best possible outcome. They didn’t cut corners. They were in communication with the technical experts at the paint company when one of the paints proved to be a problem, and brought in a specialist from that company to give them advice. And the work they did was superb. So why am I going on at such length about a paint job? I don’t do this routinely—in fact, I’ve never done it before. But this is a special company and a special group of individuals—and they deserve it. If you’re in the market for a serious painting project, call them and get an estimate from them—and do so before they become so popular that they won’t be able to fit you in!

Powell & graves did a great job painting the entire interior of my home. The price was very competitive to the other two bids I received, and I am so happy that I decided to go with them. Rolando kept me informed every step of the way, which is really important to me. The house looks amazing and I cannot wait to have people over to my house. Wish I had called them sooner! Will use again.
