After retiring, I 'Rolled over' a substantial 401k sum to various IRA investments and split them up amongst a number of banks and credit unions that paid good CD interest rates. I found it paid substantial dividends to 'shop' for better CD rates whenever a CD matured. To avoid paying tax to move a IRA matured CD amount to another institution with a better rate, you must do a 'Trustee to Trustee Direct Transfer' (NOT a 'Roll-over'). The paperwork to do this can be supplied by the destination institution that you can give to the source institution. This is usually painless IF both parties know what they are doing, which is not always the case. Affinity Plus is one of the credit unions I have used over the years for CD purchases for both IRA and non- IRA investments. Last year they created a big headache for me a few times when I had to transfer IRA money. The branch staff I frequent had no idea what to do unless they could get a hold of someone in the IRA department. Someone, supposedly dealing with IRA calls gave me incorrect paperwork to do the transfer. In another instance, two 1099Rs I received showed IRA transfers being incorrectly coded as 'distributions' - meaning I took money out of the IRAs. This was flagged by a tax preparer telling me I owed thousands in taxes. This debacle was compounded by having to 'prove' I made a legitimate IRA transfer to another bank - despite the fact that it was Affinity Plus's error. They also made no effort to expedite the correction in time for tax filing until I made a personal appearance at their home office. I still use Affinity Plus as an investment tool for my money, but caution anyone dealing with IRAs to double-check their paperwork every time, as Affinity's front-line staff has almost no idea what to do correctly. It is currently the worst financial institution for this I have to deal with.
